It begins: you can now watch a streaming version of the entire film at channel13.org.
Many more formats will be online by March 7th, the day Sita Sings the Blues airs on WNET TV (part of Reel 13 on March 7 at 10:45 pm). These will be higher resolution and free to copy and share. If you want a copy, please wait for the higher quality formats instead of capturing the very compressed channel13.org streaming version. As the artist, I want the highest quality versions to circulate; it’d be sad if a super-compressed capture started torrenting first. Together, we can keep quality high!
Sweet. I’m excited to see the movie, but I think I’ll wait for the high quality versions.
Sweet exactly. I’m confused about one thing, though: it appears to be posted here as well:
http://www.thirteen.org/sites/reel13/indies/indie-sita-sings-the-blues/241/
any idea why it’s posted twice? I can only figure this one is from today as well. The first appears to be a blog posting about it, and the one at my link appears to be like the “program info” when you click on it in the site’s sidebar.
Weird, but oh well… I’m holding out for a high-rez download version =)
Beautifully done! Now I wish I had it on blu ray. 🙂
Woot!
I saw it in SF a while ago, just saw it today, and now its playing again in a different tab as I type this.
Absolutely love the movie. Bravo.
Waiting patiently for the higher-quality version…
Waiting…
Waiting…
Is it ready yet? 🙂
I am so excited. I’ve been wanting to see the movie but I think I’ll wait for the high quality version and torrent it.
That’s great! I saw Sita last year at the Tribeca Film Festival and it was my absolute favorite film of the year. Ever since I’ve been telling people about this film, and they’ve been complaining that they haven’t been able to see it. So glad to hear that they’ll finally have the opportunity to watch your wonderful work. Bravo, Nina!
Blather From Brooklyn
I have been following your work since the last 3-4 years. I’m glad that you have finally made it to the front page of NYT (online). I’ll have to look up the DVD that I had bought some years ago and see what new scenes took shape over the years. Congrats once again.
Congratulations! I’ll bide my time and wait for the high quality version; and then I’ll be happy to seed a torrent, too.
(Not only that, but we’re planning a Sita-watching-party!)
Has anyone worked out how to get the Reel 13 swf to embed offsite?
If distribution of large files is still a question… Amazon’s S3 will act as a seed host for bittorrent distribution… 600 gb @~ 10c/gb is $60.
Absolutely brilliant!
I gave Sita a shout-out on CricketToes:

Hope that’ll help ya get more donations, Nina. 🙂
It’s fantastic. Would love to see it in HD.
That was lovely. I didn’t think it could live up to anticipation, but it did.
PS-can I say as a Cat Lady how much I appreciated the Lexi postscript? 🙂
That was just so beautiful…thank you for making it available.
Wow, Nina. Wow. Every minute you spent on SITA shines through.
LOVED IT!!!! It was beautiful.
Does Nina read the comments?
I just wanted to ask if there was a list naming the songs in the movie!! If anyone knows, please comment!
I really liked them all! Even the beginning and ending pieces! Also the song that played after Nina got dumped.
p.s. my favorite exchange between the shadow puppets:
#2: didn’t she give away all her jewelery?
all: …
#1: …don’t challenge the story.
hahaha
uhhh…
I continued watching the credits and I found the names of the people involved in the film’s music. (-__-‘)
heh heh heh
If anyone else who’s reading this and is as slow as me (doubt it) and wants to see everyone involved then here’s a link to Nina’s website:

Please ignore my dumb mistake earlier as I have honorably redeemed myself. 😀
What a gift. Thanks Nina. I’m spreading the word and the love!
Congratulations Nina! I’m watching it right now!
Ummm…

What’s going on?
Never mind. Finally got it working.
I’m so glad I finally got to see “Sita Sings the Blues!” I was on the verge of taking a road trip to some faraway film festival. It was great- I’ll definitely be acquiring a DVD when the high-quality version is released.
This was fantastic! I’m watching it a second time right now. 🙂
Really great clever storytelling and gorgeous animation! I’m a student, so this really inspires me and it’s very fresh and different from a lot of things I’ve seen. Thanks for such a great story! (Love the music, by the way).
– Louise
Definitely getting it on DVD!

…spoiled our sunday morning 🙁 great artwork though!
…why not put this on youtube too (more reliable)? again great story-telling!!!
The video plays for me. I only watched a minute to verify it running, but it seems to run fine. Temporary issue on the web site’s end?
It appears to be down right now, also, with the same error message as reported in comment #25.
regarding comment #26: youtube would be a good place for it with the exception that they don’t make it very easy to put up videos longer than several minutes. It might be possible if Nina gets a special account from them, but I’m not too sure about the specifics.
You must send this for Oscar next year.
Amazing style and a brilliantly narrated story.
Good luck and I want to see this in Oscars for sure.
It seems to have been uploaded to Google Video now — slightly lower quality but it appears to be the full film still. So while Reel13 is having issues, try it here:

The 480p version as posted today on archive.org is now available as a torrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/2339365

You are fabulous. Sita’s credits are rolling on WNYC as I type and I can’t wait to see this again. When can I see it in a theatre?
By the way, you and WNET13 should add a Digg, Delicious and their ilk links to the Sita pages. You would get even more exposure. You deserve it.
For anyone confused about the now-dead torrent links in my previous comments in this thread, please disregard them all now and refer instead to the Sita Wiki “sites page” for your preferred download. I suggest getting a torrent! obviously 😉
I’ve been dying to see this since I first read about it in the NY Times. Finally saw it yesterday, it’s brilliant! I’m Hindu, so I’ve been raised with this story, and readily accepted what Rama did to Sita as necessary, given that he is held as a sort of moral beacon, and Sita the “ideal wife” i.e. listening to everything the husband says. I think, though, this is the first time I finally saw the story through Sita’s eyes, and understood the heartache she must have endured. It’s beautifully juxtaposed with your own story. All in all, it’s fantastic.

Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait for the DVD as Reel13, vimeo and this blog are all requiring the proprietary Flash plugin to works ;{{{{{
The players on these sites do not work with the Gnash plugin (free implementation of flash).
It’s a pity because some youtube videos and koreus sites work perfectly. So, there exists flash video players that run in gnash (probably because they do not rely on poor code to try to protect copyrights…)

I am a Hindu and an Indian, born and brought up in India, on Ramayana. I absolutely loved this film- everything, its perspective, technique and humour. Nina, I read your interview and was saddened to see that some Indians wrote aggressive, angry comments. I can assure you that there are several like me who think they are stupid and don’t clearly understand a religion which is based o debate and freedom. I apologize on behalf of Hinduism, though people like that are not Hindus in my sight. The question of Rama’s indifference to his wife’s plight is a much debated and reopened issue. That is part of the appeal- the fact that Rama s not all virtue and no vice. Since you are so well read in this mythology, you’ll appreciate another instance in the Ramayana, where Rama stands faulty- in his killing of Vali, for which is suffers as Krishna. But the story of Sita is more tragic, because Rama does not even recognize his colossal flaw. The only redress is that since he loved Sita, he suffered too and that is LAME. All in all, I loved your film. I wish you all the very best in all and every future endeavour, especially against evil copyright companies.
Dear Ms. Paley,
It was my pleasure to see your film in Portland last week. It is certainly a most remarkable piece of artistic work. I have followed a small bit of your battles and sympathize with your frustrations. Perhaps you will successfully recoup some of the money further down the line.
I am certain that Annette would have been absolutely knocked out by Sita. Trust that she was a cutting edge personality even in her later age. As always, it presents her work the way she preferred….on tape and not live and in person!
I was disappointed not to have had the opportunity to introduce myself. Your appearance with the film was advertised, but obviously something happened.
With continued wishes for the success of your project,
Frank W Hanshaw 111
