“We at Northeastern University stand for inclusion and diversity.”

Today I was supposed to speak to an animation class via video. College I’d never heard of, teacher I’d never heard of, small thing, figured they knew who I was. Made plans, blocked space in my calendar. Barely an hour before I’m supposed to log onto their zoom link, I get this:

Full email thread pasted below, because it’s so typical. I will never accept another speaking invitation unless they promise not to do this.

Every time I think, “good, they don’t care, it’s blown over,” and EVERY TIME this happens. I’m like Charlie Brown trying to kick Lucy’s football.
This was such a small thing I was doing AS A FAVOR TO THEM.
No more.

Hello Nina

We at Northeastern University stand for inclusion and diversity. We stand against your stance with TERF as expressed on your website and will therefore have to cancel our lecture today and withdraw this invitation.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your understanding and interest.

Hi Nina

That’s great. Tuesday the 14th of Nov works for me. Let’s keep it at 11am PST?

Would you have about 15 minutes any day before that so we can discuss the lecture briefly? I can meet on zoom/phone any Friday for 15-20 mins.

Thanks so much for your time. Looking forward to having you in class.

Dear Nina

My name is Parul and I am an artist and educator currently teaching at Northeastern University, Oakland as a Lecturer. My current offering is an Animation Basics course (syllabus attached) that introduces undergraduates to the 12 basic principles of animation and their applications in 2D and 3D using animation tools.

I am writing to you to invite you as a Guest Speaker to my class.

I teach Tuesdays 9am-12pm PST  virtually so any coming Tuesday would work for me. Would you be available for about 40-45 mins + 10 mins Q&A to speak to my class?

I was hoping you could share about Sita sings the Blues (which is my favourite piece of yours) in the context of the class. I was wondering if you could introduce your journey into animation and working on this film, the animation techniques you used and the storytelling process. Also, anything else from your work that you might want to include.

There is a stipend of $150 from the university for your valuable time.

Please let me know if you are available and interested.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Have a good weekend.

Sincerely,

Parul Wadhwa

  1. These people are pathetic. I suppose some little students complained. So sorry this is happening to you Nina.

  2. You can tell they are stupid because Oakland is not a North Eastern city. It’s in the central western East Bay.

    Jack asses.

  3. “We stand against your stance, making you differ from us so we uninclude you for inclusion and diversity”. Parul hasn’t read 1984, has them?

Nina, isn’t your cancellation fee $150?

  4. Without exception, official statements that talk about an institution’s commitment to being “inclusive” are about excluding somebody.

  5. Not only can they not muster a coherent thought, the morons can’t even write a coherent sentence. “We stand against your stance with TERF”? That sentence doesn’t make any sense. They don’t even know what they’re referring to.

  6. Mills used to be a women’s college with a decent reputation. They ran themselves into the ground and were bought by Northeastern. Now they have a big trans-inclusion program. The staff is completely captured by this lunacy. They don’t care that the students lose out. More important that they appear adequately virtuous, so this is a big dumb win for them.

  7. You buried the lead!
There is a link to a video of you and Corrina.
Some of us, who have listened to your podcast, have never seen Corrina in the flesh. So THAT is what Corrina looks like! I wish that link had been a separate post, I almost missed it. (or maybe it was and I am making an ass of myself on the internet)
It was like a bonus episode of Heterodorx.

  8. Wonder if Paul is related to the Mridul Wadhwa, the man who is in charge of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre? Instructs women who’ve been raped to “reframe their trauma”.

  9. The main Northeastern campus is in Boston. They have some sort of satellite campus arrangement with the former Oakland private women’s Mills College. I only know this because I have a high school senior and we are in the throws of college searching. Mills and Northeastern are both off the list. https://www.mills.edu/

  10. Sorry this happened again. So casual! “Sorry for the inconvenience” of declaring you anathemacit. Such a polite inquisition.

  11. This shit is relentless. It’s an endless, tedious, grinding nightmare of petty and pathetic drip drip dripping that contributes nothing as it tries to subsume everything into its grim, tedious little world where no thinking, and especially no ACTUAL creativity is allowed. Imagine you are a duck, and this is more drip drip dripping of their shitty water running right off your back. Quack Quack.
